The collaborative team

It truly takes a village to gather the resources, venues, talents, and skillsets to create an event such as the Power of Music concert. The non-profit organization Music Therapy Gateway In Communications (MTGIC) began collaboration with the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga's Department of Performing Arts (UTC) in 2013 with an annual series of advocacy concerts to promote music for therapeutic use. A wonderful result of this concert series was that the department implemented an undergraduate music therapy degree curriculum in 2019, thereby further strengthening the relationship between MTGIC and UTC.

In the ongoing pandemic of 2020-2021, these two organizations determined that any concert events scheduled during the academic year would need to be virtual. Funding was attained from the Tennessee Arts Commission's Arts Build Communities grant project to fund the concert, with the stipulation that the concert would be virtual rather than in person. Upon funding confirmation and knowing that the project could start moving forward, the magnificent artists Richard Cox, tenor, and Mark Reneau, violin were able to commit their time to be able to participate as performers on the project.

Event Timeline

It has taken approximately three years of planning and networking between the artists, speakers, and organizations to help this virtual concert event become a reality.

  • January 2018 - Richard and Martha offer an advocacy concert to a local medical organization but schedules can't be arranged at the organization.
  • September 2019 - UTC opens up undergraduate music therapy curriculum and agrees to host the concert when their main hall is re-opened from renovation.
  • March 2020 - the pandemic closes down most of the performance venues in the country, including opera houses, symphony orchestras, and Broadway.
  • April 2020 - Martha approaches UTC with the idea of applying on a grant with the Tennessee Arts Commission to create a virtual concert in collaboration with UTC. Due to the poor quality of most livestream audio, it was determined that the program would be pre-recorded and then posted to YouTube rather than trying to livestream directly.
  • May 2020 - UTC agrees to contribute the video portion of the program as an in-kind contribution, and a grant is applied on to pick up all other costs.
  • July 2020 - The grant proposal is accepted, an excellent audio engineer is hired to record the audio portion of the concert, and initial planning of the program is underway.
  • August 2020 - Senator Lamar Alexander agrees to film a tribute to the power of music to the individual to be utilized as an add-on to the program.
  • September 2020 - Due to new rules for online livestream, the original program content is revised so that each selection will be completely within public domain (works that were composed up to and including the year 1925).
  • October 2020 - The concert is initially scheduled to be filmed during early January 2021.
  • November 2020 - Due to the sizeable outbreak of Covid at the end of 2020, the performers decided it was better not to risk the exposure to film the concert in January; filming was delayed until April 2021.
  • March 2021 - The pre-concert webinar symposium is recorded and Stratton Tingle's tribute to the power of music in the community is created. Both of these videos are add-ons to the program.
  • April 2021 - The program is filmed live in Cadek Hall on the campus of UTC.
